Caught fire 31/10/2008 causing over a million dollars of damage.

Fire has destroyed the Diggers Rest Hotel, north of Melbourne, causing about a million dollars damage.

Fire crews said the building was fully alight when they arrived on the scene just before midnight.

Eighteen trucks were called to the fire because the firefighting effort was hampered by poor water supply in the area.

The Old Calder Highway is closed at Diggers Rest and police say the walls of the hotel may collapse.

The Country Fire Authority's Joel Davey says the fire was one of the biggest in the area for some time.

"When fire crews first arrived the building was fully involved," he said."
