Palace Hotel

Hotel established in 1897. Corner of Maritana Street.

Built by the Hannan's Land Company of London, The Palace was the earliest of the 2 storey brick and stone hotels built after the rush and claimed to offer all the seductive comforts to 'soothe the jaded magnate'. Constructed of stone from quarries south of Boulder
it boasted lavish public areas, sweeping verandahs and a large cellar.

The Palace became an institution in Kalgoorlie managed by Spencer 'Cookie' Cook for 37 years from 1899 with many famous figures passing through its doors. Fred Lindrum played in the Billiards Room & his son Walter went on be World Champion.

Herbert Hoover was the most celebrated customer. After a fleeting dalliance with a Palace barmaid during his time in the Goldfields he commissioned an elaborately framed mirror which graces the foyer to this day alongside a copy of the touching poem he penned to his sweatheart in old Kalgoorlie. He went on to be President of the USA.

Today the Palace is still a favourite meeting place with its Gold Bar downstairs and Balcony Bar and Restaurant upstairs.
