Wilcannia was once a thriving river port on the edge of the outback, transporting wheat and wool by paddlesteamer along the Darling in the 19th century. Located on the Darling River where the Barrier Highway crosses, the town was the third largest inland port in the country during the river boat era of the mid-19th century.
Today, its dusty streets are still lined with a remarkable collection of heritage buildings and there's an emerging movement of local artists. It is located where the Barrier Highway crosses the River Darling in an isolated, low-rainfall area of the state.

Travel options
Wilcannia is accessible primarily by road via the Barrier Highway (A32), positioned between Broken Hill (approximately 200km) and Cobar. Located between Broken Hill and Cobar in the Outback of New South Wales, Wilcannia on the Darling River became an important staging point for travelers.
The town serves as a key stopping point for those exploring outback NSW, with caravaners able to top up their water tanks with the town's filtered household drinking water at the BP depot. Public transport options to this remote location are limited, making private vehicle the primary means of access.
