Former Green Swamp Inn

Former Green Swamp Inn

Now a private residence called 'Folliard" "the current residence is part of the old building. There are still 3 existing rooms one being the bar as shown in the photograph, thought to have been where the two bushrangers Thurston and Angel were thrown over the bar after being shot in 1880s. the front gable still looks the same but the cottage is no longer there, but the old post office and butcher shop on the other side not shown in the picture is still in its original condition. " - Carolyn - Current resident. Colin lived there for 58 years.

Thanks Carolyn

A brief history of Green Swamp (Cullenbone) Inn –
Publican license issued
William Prothero 1/7/1866
Louisa Prothero 31/7/1866
Bernard Naughton 1/7/1868;1/7/1869; 1/7/1870
Aaron Thompson 1/7/1871; 1/7/1872; 1/7/1873
Sarah Thompson 1/7/1874
Charles W Paine 1/7/1875 to 1/7/1881
Sarah Paine 31/7/1895 to 31/7/1898

William Prothero was a former soldier who married Louisa Smith. He died and Louisa married Bernard Naughton. They later had hotel in Gulgong.
Aaron Thompson married Sarah Lamrock, daughter of James Lamrock & Ann nee Cuthbertson and then when Aaron Thompson died 15/8/1873; Sarah married Charles Paine. Sarah Paine died 28/12/1907.

It seems that Aaron Thompson was there in 1861 & the Inn was on 2 acres leased from Henry Cox until 1865 when Prothero took over lease. Aaron Thompson then owned 5 acres with the Inn and after 1873 a Store was also added; Sarah being the lessee. In 1877 Charles Paine then Mrs Sarah Paine lessee owned by trustees of A Thompson. Up until 1903.
The Cudgegong Council rate books finish in 1903, but other document seem to indicate that Robert & Mary Beames ran store and post office for some time.

Next mention is in 1909 Sands Commercial directory for Mrs Martin.
Notes by late Mrs Woolley states 1898-1908 Sarah Martin.; 1901 + Mrs Paine; Mrs Beames 1908;
Unsure when the Inn license expired.
It was burnt down in 1912.

The new Hotel was then built after this and was attached to what must have been the Governesses house.
